Meet our Vets


Nigel Swayne

Nigel qualified from Guelph, Canada in 1972. Having been part of Swayne and Partners for over 30 years Nigel has a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw upon, he is passionate about all aspects of veterinary medicine and surgery.

Duncan Hole

MA, Vet MB, Cert VC, MRCVS
Having qualified from Cambridge in 1991, Duncan joined Swayne and Partners at our Newmarket branch in 1994. He became a Partner and moved to our Bury St Edmunds surgery in 1999. Duncan holds a post-graduate certificate in veterinary cardiology and takes referrals from other practices in the area. With the support of our highly qualified and experienced nurses, Duncan is able to carry out complex cardiac diagnostic procedures and cardiothoracic surgery. At home, Duncan and his family enjoy spending their spare time caring for their menagerie of animals.

Simon Culmstock

Simon qualified from Liverpool University in 1997 and initially worked in mixed veterinary practice before joining Swayne and Partners in 2000, becoming a Partner in the practice in 2007.

Simon enjoys all aspects of veterinary practice, and has a special interest in orthopaedic problems. He holds a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons post-graduate qualification in surgery, and the Long Melford practice is fully equipped for the investigation and treatment of orthopaedic cases, such as complex fracture repairs and joint problems. Simon is particularly interested in the management of canine cruciate ligament injuries, in which he has considerable experience, and he currently offers a range of surgical treatments for this condition which can be tailored to the specific needs of the patient.

Outside of work Simon enjoys spending his free time with his family.

Rachel Phillips

BVetMed Cert (AVP) MRCVS

After over 7 years working as a Vet and then a Clinical Manager in a mixed practice in Norfolk, Rachel joined Swaynes in May 2016.

As a student a decade ago, she fell in love with Swayne’s and the team here. Rachel is now a director and currently resides at the Newmarket branch. She has a certificate in advanced veterinary practice.

Outside work, Rachel’s world is still overflowing with animals, including 5 bouncy labradors who enjoy long walks and long cuddles.

Aimee Barker

Aimee has worked at Swaynes since graduating in 2010, she started her career in the Bury branch where she enjoys the mixed animal work. In 2015 Aimee was offered the chance to become a director with the Newmarket team, where she enjoys seeing medicine cases and working with an amazing team. In her spare time she has a baking passion and in April of 2017 hopes to complete her first marathon!

Tom Turner

Tom started working for Swaynes in 2014 having graduated from Edinburgh earlier that year. Prior to vet school he also completed a Biology degree at the University of Bath. Since qualifying Tom has also spent a short time working in Cornwall in 2015, returning to Swaynes at the end of 2015 to become a Director. Tom is based at our Haverhill Surgery, he has a particular interest in surgery and is currently studying towards a post graduate certificate in small animal surgery with Liverpool vet school. Tom is an avid rugby fan and enjoys playing whenever he can. Clients may often see Tom’s Border Terrier ‘Evie’ wandering round the practice who comes to work with him.


Margaret Phizacklea

After qualifying from Murdoch University, Western Australia Margaret worked in a rural, small and large animal practice, her first ever surgical experience was repairing a kangaroos fractured leg. Since joining Swayne and Partners in 1988 Margaret has worked at both our Long Melford and Bury St Edmunds branches but now is solely based at Bury and spends the majority of her time treating our equine patients. When not spending time with her family Margaret enjoys competing and riding her own horses as well as travelling.

Tom Towers 


Tom graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2014 and joined the Swayne and Partners team the following year. He has an interest in all aspects of small animal medicine and surgery. He particularly enjoys anaesthesia and pain medicine having attained a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice focusing on anaesthesia and emergency & critical care and he continues to study towards Advanced Practitioner status in these areas. One day a week Tom provides some small group teaching for the vet students at Cambridge Vet School. In his spare time, Tom enjoys reading, DIY and baking; he has a rescued black cat called Fuzz.

Florentine Atkins

Florentine qualified from Utrecht University, Holland and has worked for our Long Melford branch of Swayne and Partners since 2003. Florentine’s main interest is diagnostic imaging and she is enrolled in a post-graduate certification. In Florentines spare time, she enjoys walking her mad but lovely (!!!) Border terrier `Evie’. She has two cats, Bernard and Isobelle.MA, VetMB, MRCVS

Helen Atkinson

Helen started her early school life in England and moved to Malaysia where she finished high school. Having moved back to the UK to fulfil her ambition of becoming a vet, she graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2014. She joined the small animal team at Swayne and Partners in October 2014. Helen is enthusiastic about all aspects of veterinary practice, in particular soft tissue surgery. Helen is also joined at Swayne and partners by her beautiful wire haired viszla, Pippa, who not only qualified and was shown at Crufts, but is often to be found greeting clients behind reception. Outside work Helen has an active social life and enjoys clay pigeon shooting and travelling.

Alex Berry

Alex graduated from Cambridge University in June 2019, shortly after he joined the Bury branch at Swayne & Partners. Alex has particular interests in neurology and cytology. In his spare time, Alex teaches first year veterinary students anatomy at Cambridge Vet School and also enjoys running. 


Elizabeth Fountain BVSc MRCVS

Lizzie graduated in 2013 from Liverpool Vet School and has worked in our Haverhill branch since, enjoying many aspects of small animal practice. She has a special interest in background poultry medicine and has attended a number of courses about chickens. Her two dogs, Jess and Finnbarr, keep her busy when she has time off from the surgery!

Susannah White

Susannah graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2017 and started her career at the Long Melford branch of Swayne & Partners. She loves working with small furries and exotics and looks after the majority of the wildlife cases brought into the practice. At home she has a cat, guinea pigs, sugar gliders, ferrets and a pony to keep her busy, but in her spare time she plays and referees a lot of korfball and competes in OCR (obstacle course racing).

Alexandra Gray

Alex graduated from the University of Bristol in 2018 and moved to Suffolk to start at the Long Melford branch of Swayne and Partners shortly afterwards. She enjoys all of the challenges that veterinary medicine brings but has a particular interest in cardiology.
Outside of work Alex is an avid baker and also enjoys exploring new places and admiring nature’s beauty. Alex decided not to bring her cat Pixie to her new home as she is already so settled with her Mum in Kent – she misses her a lot and she and her partner hope to get a feline friend in the near future.

Emily Rose

Emily graduated from Cambridge University in 2015 and has been in small animal practice since. Emily joined the Newmarket team in December 2017. She also does some night and weekend work at the Bury St Edmunds branch. Emily loves all aspects of small animal practice and especially enjoys surgery and emergency and critical care work. In her spare time she enjoys baking, painting and keeping fit. Emily lives in Fordham with her dog, cat, rabbits, degu and tortoise – and her husband!

Laura Morgan

Laura graduated from the University of Edinburgh in July 2017 before completing a rotating internship at the Animal Health Trust. She joined the Bury St Edmunds branch of Swaynes in September 2018. Laura loves all aspects of small animal practice but has particular interests in internal medicine and dermatology. Outside of work she enjoys outdoor adventures and socialising with her friends.

James Ireland


Ruth Cawston MA VetMB MRCVS

Ruth graduated from Cambridge in 2014, and joined Swayne and Partners soon after. She enjoys all aspects of her job, but is particularly interested in medicine and ultrasonography, and is currently studying for a certificate in Small Animal Medicine. Outside of work, she can often be found up on the north Norfolk coast with her husband and their golden retriever, where they go walking, and sailing when the weather permits!

Sarah Sutton

Sarah Completed a degree in Zoology at the University of Leeds before studying Veterinary Medicine at the RVC. Since graduating in July 2012 she has been working in small animal practice. In 2014, Sarah completed a rotational internship at the RVC which allowed her to work alongside specialists in various areas including cardiology, in which she has a particular interest. Following a further year in a general practice, Sarah came to work at Swayne and Partners and hopes to complete her cardiology certificate in the near future.  Out of work Sarah is a keen hockey player and plays for her local club. She lives with her partner, dog Esther, cat Doris and Chester the chinchilla.


Clare Parker

Clare completed a degree in Bioveterinary science in 2012 and then graduated from the Royal Veterinary College as a veterinary surgeon in 2017. Originally from Suffolk, Clare returned to the countryside to join Swayne & Partners in 2017.

She thoroughly enjoys all aspects of veterinary practice, especially the challenging cases and the unpredictability the job can bring. In her  spare time she enjoys playing hockey for her local club whenever she can, travelling, skiing and getting out with her Labrador Custard.


Charlotte Dobson

Charlotte graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in June 2017 and began working at the Bury St Edmunds branch of Swaynes in August 2017. She enjoys all aspects of her job but is particularly interested in diagnostic imaging and clinical pathology. Outside of work she enjoys playing hockey for her local club, riding her family’s horses and other outdoor pursuits.


Rob Littlechild

Rob graduated from Cambridge in 2017 and started working at the Bury St. Edmunds branch shortly afterwards. He enjoys the day-to-day variety which comes along with companion animal work and has been developing a particular interest in exotic and wild-life patients. Outside of work, Rob is a keen archer and when given the opportunity will disappear to find a hill to climb and some miserable weather to camp in.


Marissa Wall




Tali Caldecott


Tali graduated from Cambridge in 2017 and started working for Swayne and Partners the following April. She is currently enjoying all aspects of the job and the variety which each day brings. Outside of work she enjoys rowing, live music, spending time with friends and visiting family back in North Wales.




Hollie Pownall-Anderson

 Hollie graduated from Nottingham University in July 2019 and joined the team at Swayne & Partners in Bury in August 2019. Hollie enjoys all aspects of veterinary practice but has a particular interest in ophthalmology. Outside of work Hollie enjoys baking, running and training her mischievous cocker spaniel puppy Lennie.


Alexandra St Pierre

 After graduating from the University if Pennsylvania, Alex spent two years in large animal and equine referral practice before joining the Newmarket team in November 2019. While she enjoys all aspects of clinical practice, Alex finds emergency and internal medicine cases particularly rewarding. Outside of the practice, Alex enjoys being a new dog mum to Staffie cross, Gilly, and exploring her new home country with her husband. She is a terrible cook, passible baker and an avid ice hockey fan. 


Claire Stratford

Claire graduated from the university of Nottingham in 2016 and has worked in small animal practice ever since. She started her career in a busy 24 hours small animal hospital in Hampshire before moving to Suffolk in May 2019. Claire is particularly interested in medicine, behavioural and imaging cases and is currently studying a post graduate qualification in diagnostic imaging. In her spare time Claire loves being outdoors and enjoys mountaineering, running, canoeing, horse riding and spending time with her border collie Rey, who joins in with everything except the horse riding.
